Q: Are organic food healthier?

A: They contain the same amount of nutrients. But, since they are grown without pesticides and do not contain harmful ingredients, they are definitely safer for your health. 

Q: Are organic food really organic?

A: Yes, organic food really is organic. Refer to the USDA label which stands for United States Department of Agriculture. According to the USDA, as crops that are produced on farms that have not used most synthetic pesticides herbicides or fertilizer for three years before harvesting the food. There needs to be a significant buffer zone to decrease contamination from adjacent farm lands. Farms also have to be free from any genetic engineering, ionizing radiation or sewage sludge (yes really sewage sludge). It relates to livestock, animals must be fed organic feed, live on organic land and be raised without routine antibiotics or hormones.

Q: Are organic food more nutritious?

A: No, they are not. The same amount of nutrients can be found in non-organically grown food.

A: They are better in the sense that they do not include and are grown with toxic chemicals like pesticides that can be very harmful to your body causing many health related issues ranging from allergies to even cancer. 

Q: Are organic food expensive?

A: That depends on where you get your goods from. At the end of the day yes, organic foods on average tend to be more expensive than non-organic foods. This is largely because farmers have to pay close attention to their cultivation practices. Pests, weeds and diseases must be managed by physical, mechanical and biological controls instead of pesticides. When it comes to meat and dairy products, animals that are not raised organic are often given growth hormones that increase milk production and steroids that help promote growth, yielding more meat. Increased meat and milk production means farmers don’t have to charge as much because they have more to sell. - UC DAVIS HEALTH 

Q: Can organic food be irradiated?

A: Fortunately No! They cannot be exposed to radiation and gain the certification of organic. Especially from the USDA

Q: Can organic food be gmo?

A: The use of genetic engineering, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), is prohibited in organic products. This means an organic farmer can't plant GMOseeds, an organic cow can't eat GMO alfalfa or corn, and an organic soup producer can't use any GMO ingredients. - USDA

Yes, before the creation of pesticides and modern-day technology/chemicals, the world happily lived off of organic food for millions of years. Organic food is the natural way of life on this Earth! It always was and it we should always try to preserve it! 

Q: Can organic food use pesticides?

A: According the USDA, organic farmers are only allowed to use natural pesticides and not synthetic pesticides. Using synthetic pesticides will disqualify most brands from branding themselves as "organic". Natural pesticides include a variety of ingredients that can be found in your kitchen. The most common natural pesticide is a salt spray! If a brand is claiming to be organic but they do not meet organic requirements they are liable to be sued for false advertising/misinformation/misrepresenting.

A: USDA certified organic foods are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors, soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives. Organic producers rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent possible.

Q: Can organic food have preservatives?

A: No, they never will and never can! A blessing isn't it?

A: Plants are autotrophs since they produce their own food. Plants use sunlight, water, air, and simple sugars like glucose to produce their own food that keeps them going! Truly organic!

A: On a realistic note, everything! But, if you can't start with everything, start by identifying the food that you consume the most. Slowly switch out those foods to healthier organic options for your benefit! For example, you love strawberries and you eat. strawberries everyday. Start buying organic strawberries as it is it something that you consume the most which also has a big impact on your overall health.
